Origin –

It’s the successor of b2/cafelog 2001

History –

2001 – b2 cafelog launched by Michel Valdrighi.

2003 – Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little fork b2 and create WordPress.

2004 – Plugins are introduced with Version 1.2 (Mingus).

WordPress is an Open Source project, which means there are hundreds of people all over the world working on it. vs – is less flexible than the you download and install yourself.

Myths and Security –

2009 – 4 updates were done in a month due to discovered security breaches. Most were bad themes and plugins, but core was compromised. Security teams were quick to respond and patch the issue and nothing to this scale has happened since. Moral of the story is, update your stuff!

If you don’t like WordPress then stop whining and get involved! Most critics are NOT contributing because they can’t or won’t so their criticism seems a little envious.

It’s not a free-for-all:

There are 25 security experts with 50% of them working at Automattic full time. Core leadership team is Matt Mullenweg and 5 lead developers, and a number of core developers with permanent commit access.


  • Use Strong Passwords
  • Give 2-step authentication a try

If there is a problem, report issues in support forums – but be NICE! It’s free not paid, these are fellow users and volunteers that are professionals.

Inclusion of plugins and themes in the repository is not a guarantee that they are free from security vulnerabilities. The WordPress Security discovers and works with author to fix theme or plugin issues.
